I was at my shop in the middle of working on a client because tonight was her birthday party, so she came to me to get her makeup done. While I was finishing up the final touches on her face, my phone was constantly vibrating in the back pocket of my jeans. I loved my family dearly, but I swear, they always chose to call me at times when I was extremely busy. When the phone would stop buzzing, it would only start back up again.

“Nakia, please come here,” I called out to my assistant, who was sitting at the front desk to the shop.

Before I opened the shop, I took in applications, and I was very specific on who I was looking for when it came to an assistant. I knew first hand that I was a lot to deal with, so I was looking for someone, who was strong enough to handle me, could multi task, and someone who wasn’t lazy. I also wanted it to be someone in their early twenties who was in school for cosmetology because there may be days when something important came up, and I would need my assistant to do a client’s make-up just as good as me, and Nakia was just the person that I was looking for. It was something about her that reminded me of myself when I was her age.

“Yes, boss lady?” she said, coming over to me with a smile on her face.

“Girl, I done told you to stop calling me that,” I said and playfully rolled my eyes.

The whole time that she and I were talking, I never once turned my back to look at her because I was so busy focusing on the client that was in front of me. “Grab my phone out of my back pocket. It’s been ringing for the past five minutes or so,” I told her, and she did exactly that.

I was in my favorite white jeans from Balmain, and I’d be crazy to reach my hand into them with all of this make-up on my hands. She reached into my pocket and grabbed my phone, which was still buzzing, and showed me that it was Jah calling. She answered it and placed the phone to my ear.

“Jah, what’s up? I’m working,” I said to him.

“Sis, don’t start wilding and shit and screaming in my ear and shit, but your nephew decided that he wants to grace the world with his presence and shit today. We just got to the hospital,” Jah said.

Although he told me not to start screaming, I did exactly that. I just saw Antonia last night and I told her that I didn’t see her going another day with that baby in her stomach because she was so damn big. I loved that girl for coming out last night and supporting me because I could look at her and tell that her back was killing her, along with her feet, but she put all of that to the side just to be there for me.
